Are you guilty of Facebook Overkill?

Written by Lisa on November 27, 2009 – 12:13 pm -

Many now are using Facebook for a business networking platform, (yes I understand it can be great for personal connections to).   However a trap is becoming very obvious to me and many of facebook are guilty of this very Facebook sin.

The type of user this is directed at is the user pushing out so much content that others do not get to push their information in between.  There content is coming so fast you see nearly a whole page of their status and feeds.  This is the perfect example of someone that will have their facebook feed hidden or worse taken off a list.  The arguement is on the other side its a good way to see who really wants to listen to you, it also gives you leverage.  I disagree in  life variety is good.  Business and your audience is not all about one dimension of content or information.  If you do this you could be classed as giving information over load.  I call it a sin as its not strategy savatarging your presence and your authority, it undoes your hard work in Social Media.  It is not strategy making people sick and tired of hearing you.

Overkill is happening, their is a way to ensure your not guilty and your feed is not taken off their home page.  There are steps to ensure you do not look like the kid that is starving for attention.  I watch this often even with great people.  I know what the person is trying to achieve like all business on Facebook traffic, exposure, presence or leadership in niche.  However this is what happens.

  • Your feed is hidden
  • Your unfollowed as over bearing
  • Your audience stops communication and conversing on your stream
  • You are no longer getting paid attention to at ALL.

On Facebook the importance is on your Status and your feed whether it be a page or profile.  In business strategy its an important core of your Social Media presence.  With strategy its important to note to keep your audience intrigued or entertained.  However not the most important strategy to engage your audience.

A  quality with presence and respect I am sure is everyone’s aim.  Whether you be a leader or follower building a relationship must be the core focus.  Getting trust and building on this trust must be the core focus in any Social Media Strategy.  To do this is quite simple.  You add value where you can add something to a conversation.  You can comment and get to know your followers paving the way to further communications and everyone knowing who you are.  Giving others attention, giving others credit is part of being good at facebook.  When I watch those who use facebook effectively, they communicate, they comment, they answer and they follow up.  They watch others that provide value and add to the value if they can.  This strategy is noticed.

That is when you get friends that see your Contribution then wish to know you more as they liked what you said, so not only do you contribute you build your relationships and get more.

The 7 Deadly Sins of Twitter

Written by Lisa on October 30, 2009 – 10:10 am -

1) Not using your name on your profile.

2) Never learning how to do a @ reply, you are missing viral effect & marketing advantage and leaving money on the table.

3)Sending repetitive messages that show duplicates on your profile, (also the same deadly sin is sending 5 messages at once), its unprofessional, do not do it.

4)Not uploading your personal photo to your personal profile, You are real you are a person use your photo.  Do not use alvin and the chipmunks, a book or icon, if its personal use your own Photo not some movie stars.

5)Using Twitter with no Background, Like not even having a front door on a house……….not done.

6) Having code showing in a message, (this could be html code or BBC code it looks ugly everyone knows what you were trying to do its horrible).

7)Not getting to know whom you are following; this could prove a dilema for your reputation if for example; Your a Child advocate and have a porn star follow you………..this connects you with a porn star……….do you really want to be connected and have your name associated with that topic?

This Sins of Twitter where produced to provide some unwritten laws of twitter that one must abide with.

How I got Screwed on Social Media without even knowing I had been Screwed.

Written by Lisa on August 17, 2009 – 11:39 pm -

Has it happened to you yet?

Here are some things that can happen to you:

  1. Some could Slam an Article about a product you are marketing.
  2. It could be on facebook,
  3. It could about your hub page,
  4. It could be via twitter

No matter whichever, it names you and pulls your reputation down.

With Business Online, there is one huge pitfall in using Social Media that we often over look.  Social Media can screw you over big time.  Yes it just happened to me.  Let me save you some aggravation, embarrassment and wasted time. Most hacking and spreading is going to happen via Social Media, its part of this Connected generation.

Whatever you use, you can be hacked, (screwed over) discredited, broken down, reputation smacked no matter how big you are or how long you have been in business.  The Only way to combat this EVIL side of Social Media is become fully informed as best you can and make sure you build strong ties with your circle of trust.

Today to my horror, I was named as a person that gave someone else a Virus through Skype a messenger service, this I must say can happen with any messenger program and not just Skype.  Even though I explained that he was using or receiving whatever he received from my Old Skype that I had had problems with and haven’t been able to open for quite some, hence I opened a whole new account and advised most people of the change. I how understanding of how or what this old account has been doing [Viva La Hackers]

Advice

NEVER accept anyone sending you a file that you do not know extremely well, as it can totally control your system and screw up all of your documents and take over whatever your doing.  Unfortunately you can take your pick of how to get a virus. For this one mentioned however you can look over this interesting article how to defend against Skype’s issues opening it up for allowing virus sharing.

Here is more specific information for the problem:

One needs to realise never accept any products sent via file type or download, use email.  If you know them and its agreed to send that’s different.

Check the Video for how others are getting the Virus off Skype.

Skype is an extension of Social Media, you are in charge still. It proves you can be blown away by social media spreading just in one day.  Guess what, I was named as the person that infected a top player.  He was not doing anything specifically to me, but thinking in his own way this was warning me.  So I am well & truly warned and so are probably 100,000 people.  I am sure its a plot to keep the Anti-virus companies in business, yes I do see the humorous side.  You need to keep the realistic side with some humor it helps you whether any business storm.  Mind you Kudos to my friend for making all his connections aware of this vulnerability, that is a true leader saying even the harsher side of small internet business.

So be very careful of any files sent to you via any means.  Skype is not the only one doing this.

The Internet unfortunately everyone wants to be everyone’s friend, it proves you cannot just add anyone to your contacts.  Check to see if they are genuine.  See if those people have a photo, information that is personalised and

This can be the side of Small Business Marketing Online that can be a little daunting, thank goodness there are some just as smart to show us the way and give us a hand.

10 DM’s on Twitter that make Social Media People Squirm

Written by Lisa on August 1, 2009 – 11:54 pm -

With all the talk on Social Media Marketing, one cannot help but think of the old trusty Twitter.

It is part of the furniture, my husband a NON-EXISTANT Twitter user knows it. Its on the News.

There is where I come to My Headline, “10 DM’s on Twitter that make Social Media People Squirm”, not even sure squirm is the right word. Perhaps unfollow is the correct term or delete contact.  That is how a bad DM can make someone feel about that contact.

Almost as commonly as anyone knows Capitals are Yelling on Twitter, so is the Bad DM. So much so many just will not use DM’s on twitter. (Fact)

My example I have had recently was a person inviting me to expand my list of Twitter followers.  Their Twitter followers Size was 395, how can that person say they are using it more effectively that someone with 3,000++ on their list of followers?

Do not get me wrong a list of 395 can be productive and great conversation marketing, that is not my point.  The point is some DM’s just stink to high heaven.  So here is my top 10 disgusting DM’s Received.

  1. Thanks for the following! Interested in growing your Twitter following, on auto pilot? Click here:(I recieved 10 in a row exactly the same as this)
  2. Buy my http://……………………  (won’t buy, your deleted, desperato)
  3. Look at this http://…………… (no thanks have a huge list of real people to thank, just wants clicks)
  4. Thank You for the follow! Please check my website at  http:// (Screams desperation)
  5. This is the Best Advertising you will ever get I don’t need anything else (What, why are you using twitter then?)
  6. Thanks for Tweeting. (not original, seen it)
  7. Thanks for the follow! Would you like to know How to Get 16,000 Followers in 90 Days and Make Money doing it? (Got over 500 just like this, waa waa).
  8. Thanks
  9. Your so cool for following me (maybe a robot thats not cool)
  10. Hey, hows it?

Sorry got kinda sick and tired of the same old boring thing. I like variety and personality showing through so i guess I better check I am not being a lame follower too.

If you need to double check I am writing no lame stinky Dm’s you can follow me here. On Twitter
